Indoor Games

Climbing Stairs

This is a learning game.  If your child has never learned to climb stairs you can begin now.  Toddlers should learn to climb stairs by crawling, not standing.  Likewise, when coming down the stairs, help your toddler to crawl down feet first.  My daughter loved to climb stairs over and over.  Make sure to put up a gate or close the door at the top and/or bottom of the stairs at all times.  Supervise your toddler constantly while on the stairs.

Another way to practice climbing stairs, is to climb cushions that are layered to resemble stairs.

Outdoor Games

(Depending on the season of the year you can rearrange these suggestions to work for you -- see the outdoor games link above.)

Hoops Fun -- use a small hula hoop outdoors for rolling; walking or crawling through; or even to lay on ground then step over hoop rim into the middle and back out again.

Musical Exploration

Drumming -- use a real or toy drum, or even a kitchen pot turned upside down.  Using the palms of your hands tap out a rhythm.  Encourage your toddler to try and copy you.

Puppetry

Hand Puppets -- you can find regular hand puppets at any toy store.  You could also make a hand puppet out of felt.  Just trace and cut out two identical shapes that will fit over your hand.  Sew them together and decorate your puppet.  You could use your hand puppet to help with the drumming (musical exploration) time or to help sing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

You could also make a bear puppet to reinforce the french word, l'ours, for this lesson.  If you can try to make your puppet activity match at least one other learning activity on the lesson plan, you can increase your toddler's retention of new knowledge.
